Scientific Name: Tillandsia ionantha

  • Waterwise
  • Likes bright indirect light
  • Handles artificial fluorescent light
  • Likes humidity and warmth
  • Plant level: easy

The Ionantha Air Plant is one of the easiest to take care of, as well as being one of the hardiest, and makes a great first Air Plant to own.

It starts life off as a small plant with hundreds of delicate silver-green leaves. As the plant grows larger and matures, the leaves begin to turn a deeper shade of green. Once it enters its bloom cycle the leaves change colour and turn a beautiful shade of red/pink and will eventually send out little deep purple-blue shoots with a little yellow or white flower at the end.

We have paired two of our Ionantha Air Plants with a miniature glass terrarium and a sprinkling of slivered gemstones. The glass terrarium measures around 11cm in height with a top diameter of around 6cm.

Follow these instructions to keep your Ionantha healthy and happy.

Water: Do not soak the Air Plant. Mist the plants 2-3 times a week. If the plant looks particularly dry you can run it under some water. Turn plants upside down to allow excess water to run off. Let dry completely before returning to the terrarium.
Light: Likes bright, indirect light. Will thrive in bright artificial fluorescent light as well.
Humidity: Likes humidity. If the room is dry, mist more often.
Fertiliser: You can fertilise your Air Plant now and then with a balanced liquid fertiliser that has been watered down a lot. Add the diluted fertiliser to the spray bottle and mist the plant twice a month during the spring and summer months.
