Grow some of South Africa’s most iconic fynbos plants with the Protea Seed Kit Eggbox. This thoughtfully prepared kit includes seeds from six indigenous species in the Proteaceae family, giving gardeners the chance to grow their own striking proteas and their relatives from seed.
Proteas are part of the unique Cape fynbos biome and are loved for their structural flowers and their ability to attract birds and pollinators to the garden. Their striking blooms are also prized as long-lasting cut flowers, making them a beautiful addition to floral arrangements. Growing proteas from seed is a fun and rewarding process. With the right conditions and a little patience, these remarkable plants can reward you with beautiful blooms and striking garden structure.
The kit comes in a handy eggbox and includes everything you need to get started. Each kit contains seeds from six species as well as Cape Seed Smoke Primer, which helps trigger germination by mimicking the natural conditions of the fynbos ecosystem after fire.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS
Please note the detailed instructions included in packaging, below is just a guide.
- Fill the eggbox cups with the supplied soil mix or a well draining sandy potting mix.

Plant both seeds of each species in the cups at a depth roughly equal to the seed size.

Water gently and keep the soil moist, but never waterlogged.

Place seedlings in semi shade with good airflow and protect from birds and pests.

Germination may take 1 to 3 months depending on the species.
- Once seedlings reach about 4–5 cm tall, plant them into the garden or a larger pot with well-draining soil.
