Vermiculite is known as a soil additive that is often used to add drainage, aeration and improves moisture retention in many potting mediums.
Vermiculite has fabulous wicking properties which are done through capillary action, meaning it can be hydrated from above or below (dependant on your watering technique) and is often used in warmer climates to assist with preventing soil from drying out rapidly during hotter periods. Ideal for those super thirsty plants that need to stay evenly moist throughout summer.
Vermiculite is also non-toxic making it safe to use around pets and children.
