Scientific Name: Achmea Gamosepala
Synonyms: Matchstick Plant, Matchstick Flower
- Statement Plant with a unique shape
- The spectacular, colourful and long-lasting flower spike
- Produces lots of new plants for continued growth
- Plant Level: Easy
Fun, colourful and full of character, the Matchstick Bromeliad cannot go unnoticed in any setting, from its native Brazilian rainforest to your home or office.
This extremely care-easy plant, a relative of the Pineapple, has full, glossy foliage that radiates outwards from a central tank, or rosette. This is where the plant collects nutrients from the air, insects and rainfall in its natural environment. Emerging from the rosette you'll notice an intriguing spike (or bract) with pink flowers ending in blue tips, very akin to a matchstick, and as the indiscreet pink flowers open, you'll notice each has a blue throat.
Expect the bract to last for quite some time, after which it will wither, along with the mother plant. Look out for growth along the base of the plant where 'pups', or offsets will emerge. Leave these pups in place, as they feed off the mother plant while they grow. Once they have Matured you can then, replant them into their own pots, but only once they are well established.
Place your Matchstick Bromeliad in a warm spot with medium to bright indirect light, and enjoy the show. They can also be grown outdoors under a protected Patio or in a shady moist position in the garden. An all-round winner.
CARE INSTRUCTIONS
Follow these instructions to keep your Matchstick Bromeliad healthy and happy.
- Water: Water into the rosette during warmer summer months, keeping this area hydrated. Let this well dry out in winter. Water also around the base of the plant, keeping it slightly moist but not waterlogged, and letting it dry out slightly between watering. Reduce watering in winter.
- Light: Medium to Bright indirect light. Direct sunlight can cause leaf burn.
- Humidity: Prefers high humidity. Will appreciate misting. Brown leaf tips are the first indications of air that is too dry.
- Feeding: Dilute balanced fertiliser once a month during the growing season (Spring / Summer).
