Perlite is one of the most popular additives used in potting mediums, due to its excellent aeration properties and wicking ability without holding onto moisture, due to its porous structure.
Perlite is often used in potting mediums to prevent compaction which can cause oxygen loss in potting mediums, which in turn can lead to suffocation of plant roots. Perlite is also commonly used in conjunction with vermiculite which aids in moisture retention as well as peat bases potting mediums for structure and drainage.
Perlite is also non-toxic making it safe to use around pets and children.
