Philodendron Micans Care Instructions

Scientific name: Philodendron hederaceum var. hederaceum
Synonyms: Velvet leaf Philodendron, Micans, Philodendron Micans

The Philodendron Micans is an absolutely stunning houseplant. It is highly appreciated for its velvety, heart-shaped leaves and enchanting coppery hues, which add texture and vibrance to a variety of indoor displays.

Native to the lush tropical forests of Central America and the Caribbean, this stunning trailing philodendron originates from Mexico, Brazil, and the West Indies, where it naturally cascades down tree trunks and sprawls across forest floors. Its soft, velvet-textured leaves shimmer with a mesmerising iridescence, shifting from deep green to rich copper and rusty bronze tones based on light exposure, transforming it into a living artwork in any indoor space.

Philodendron Micans Care Instructions

What truly elevates the Micans to houseplant stardom is its remarkable adaptability and low-maintenance nature. It thrives in indirect light while wanting to reach near dryness before needing a drink again. Although it doesn't require humidity, it can maintain its pristine appearance if it receives it.

The plant's trailing growth habit allows it to create stunning displays in hanging planters, draped over shelves, or allowed to climb a trellis or moss pole.

If you're looking for a beginner houseplant, Micans are an excellent choice.

Toxicity: Philodendron are known to cause stomach upset and irritation if consumed, best kept out of reach.

Philodendron Micans Common Symptoms

  • Drooping or Crisp foliage: This is an indication of underwatering, especially if the leaves are looking pale and lacklustre. Check the soil, and if it is extremely dry, adjust your watering needs to a more frequent rotation. Philodendron Micans can tolerate some drying out, but prolonged dryness will cause the delicate, velvety leaves to droop and lose their vibrant colour.
  • Pale leaves: If you have ruled out underwatering and your soil is moist but your plant's foliage is still pale, then consider the lighting conditions. A healthy Micans should have rich, velvety leaves with a subtle bronze or copper sheen. Pale appearance can indicate inadequate light—Philodendron micans thrives in bright, indirect light. While it can tolerate lower light conditions, insufficient light will cause the leaves to lose their characteristic colour and vibrant texture.
  • Yellowing leaves: Several factors can cause yellowing foliage. Overwatering is often the primary culprit, as Philodendron Micans prefer soil that dries out between waterings. Occasional yellow leaves are part of the plant's natural lifecycle, but widespread yellowing suggests issues. Make sure to review your watering schedule, allowing the soil to partially dry out in between waterings. If watering seems consistent, consider fertilisation. Use a balanced, water-soluble fertiliser during the growing season to maintain the plant's health.
  • Sparse leggy vines: This typically indicates insufficient lighting. While Philodendron Micans can adapt to lower light conditions, inadequate light will cause leggy growth with increased stem length and sparse leaf distribution. The plant will stretch towards available light, resulting in thin, elongated vines with significant spacing between leaf nodes. Relocate to a brighter spot with indirect light to encourage compact, healthy growth.
  • Mushy brown leaf patches or stems: This is a clear sign of overwatering and potential root rot. When the soil remains consistently wet, fungal and bacterial infections can develop, causing brown, mushy patches on leaves and stems. These areas may even emit an unpleasant odor. Remove affected parts immediately, ensure proper drainage, and allow the soil to dry out. If infection persists, treat with a suitable fungicide such as Copper soap.
  • Pests: Despite being relatively resilient, Philodendron Micans can still fall victim to common houseplant pests. Stress from improper care can make the plant more susceptible to infestations. Watch for mealybugs, scale insects, and spider mites, which can quickly damage the delicate foliage. Signs include stippled leaves, webbing, or visible insects. Maintain optimal growing conditions and treat any infestations promptly with insecticidal sprays like Pyrol or neem oil.

    • Origin: Central America & Caribbean
    • Height: averaging 2 m long vines.
    • Light: Tolerant of a wide range of lighting, avoid direct sunlight or total darkness.
    • Water: Allow the soil to dry out two-thirds between waterings; avoid prolonged dryness or excessive moisture.
    • Humidity: Average room humidity is fine. Though higher will keep your plants super happy.
    • Temperature: Ideal temperatures range from 18°C to 26°C.
    • Soil: A well-draining organic potting mix is sufficient.
    • Fertiliser: Use a well-balanced organic fertiliser once every two weeks during spring through summer.
    • Repotting: These are fast-growing specimens and, while young, may need regular yearly maintenance. Repot once growth has slowed or your plant has become rootbound. Choose a planter no larger than 5 cm wider than the previous, and plant into a well-draining, aerated mix consisting of milled bark or perlite for extra drainage.
    • Propagation: Philodendron Micans are fantastic plants to propagate. You will notice tiny little aerial roots coming out of the stems, usually near a leaf node. Take a cutting from your plant, snipping the main stem just before an aerial root (make sure your cutting has 1–2 leaves), and simply pop that into a moist potting medium or use a propagation vase filled with water. Pot the rooted cutting into the soil once the roots have reached 3 to 6 cm in length.
