Scientific Name: Oxalis triangularis
Common Name: Purple Shamrock

  • Fuss-free plant
  • Perfect for any collection
  • Has periods of dormancy
  • Leaves are photonastic

Among the forests of green indoor foliage, the Oxalis triangularis, or Purple Shamrock is a cheerful pop of purple. Best grown in bright, indirect light the Purple Shamrock has butterfly shaped leaves that react to the light - at night the leaves 'close up', like flowers' and open up to the light in the morning.

Take note that the Purple Shamrock is a bulb and the plant will go through periods of dormancy, especially after the growing season and may temporarily also go through dormancy if the conditions are not right for the plant. If you see the leaves beginning to die and wither away and the entire plant lacks vitality, stop watering and remove the dead brown leaves. When the plant begins to show signs of new life, you can resume watering.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS:

  • Light: Your purple shamrock will be happiest in bright, indirect light where it can develop its full potential. Shield it from intense afternoon sun to protect those delicate leaves from damage. Some gentle morning light is perfectly fine. If the light is too low - they'll get leggy and a bit unsightly.
  • Watering: Water when the top soil feels dry, keeping it moist but never soggy to prevent root rot. During winter and autumn dormancy, reduce watering to just keep the soil from completely drying out.
  • Humidity: This purple shamrock enjoys moderate humidity between 40-60%. If your home is dry, mist the leaves occasionally or place the pot on a pebble tray with water to boost moisture levels.
  • Fertilizer: Fertilize every 4-6 weeks during spring and summer using half-strength balanced liquid fertilizer. Skip feeding during the dormant winter and autumn months.
